The boats shown are believed to be ITO boats from post war Japan. I believe that ITO stands for International Trade Organization. I have been told these boats were assembled by individual families. Possibly some toys have an identifying number which may relate to the family. All of the ITO boats appear to be of very high style and quality. Here are some observations passed along by a viewer. "A couple of details stand out on what are acknowledged ITO boats. Strictly my observations: Most ITO's have decks that are crowned, not flat like the cheaper toys. A lot of the decks are also grooved to simulate planking, with the center "plank" a little wider than the rest and often painted. The steering wheels are very nice castings and act as the power switch on many. ITO liked twin screw power; some have twin motors as well, but many have a large, horseshoe magnet motor, driving a simple gear box to split the power to two prop shafts. Cast step plates are often present on the deck. Multiple ventilator scoops often appear on the engine compartment hatch as do brass rails. Also, the use of color is most unusual."Additional information on these toys would be appreciated |
