AMERICAN FLYER BOXED SET # 4024

Copyright © 1999-2010 Classic Collectables

AMERICAN FLYER SET # 4024. c.1940.  Original.   This is an prewar O gauge set consisting of the 571 Challenger die cast 4-8-4 steam locomotive and Union Pacific twelve wheel tender,  one (1) 521 die cast  heavyweight green combo car with six wheel trucks and two (2)  524 die cast heavyweight green pullman cars with six wheel trucks. The cars have all their window material, the doors all work as do the interior lights. The loco has been bench tested and runs nicely both forward and reverse, however the reverse unit is temperamental and intermittent.

The set includes 5 straight sections of track plus the uncoupler unit with one section of track attached for a total of six straight tracks.  Twelve curve tracks which does make a complete circle. All the track is quite clean and serviceable. One directional control button, two single terminal lockons numbered "3" and  one conventional lockon.

The set box has all it's compartments and the cover for the section holding the straight track.  The top has three split corners, but they are complete with no missing chunks of cardboard so they could easily be repaired / restored if desired.

Also included is a somewhat dirty, but fairly complete outer shipping carton correctly factory rubber stamped  for this set. The shipping label shows it was shipped on November 14, 1940 from a retailer in Chicago to a family in Pennsylvania, evidentially just in time for Christmas.   I've never seen a shipping carton for one of these sets and I find the history of the set that just this one box can provide to be quite interesting.

SHIPPING NOTE.  This set is very heavy, it weighs nearly 25 pounds not packed for shipping.  Due to the size, shape and weight of this set, the set box and the outer shipping carton will be shipped separately from the train itself to help prevent damage to the box.  The train will be shipped in a second carton, so shipping cost on this set will be somewhat higher than usual, however, as always, only the actual shipping cost are charged, never a handling fee or a charge for packing or materials.

SET GRADES C-7                           PRICE: $1795.00
