LIONEL - SEARS UNCATALOGED SET 59-79P

LIONEL 238, 2265W, 2600, 2601, 2602. c. 1939-40. Original. This was one of the department store specials sold by Sears and numbered by Sears as set 59-79P with the P designating it as a passenger set.  All sets with a 238 loco sold in Lionel cataloged sets had gray engines, the black 238 was only used in specials which makes it unique.  This set has many variations from normal Lionel production unique to this set.  First, the 238 is black.  The black 2265W tender came only in this set and is almost impossible to find by itself.  These uncataloged cars are really tough to find too.  They differ from normal Lionel production. The differences are they have no coupler support slots on the ends of the cars, they have black journals, they are long wheelbase cars and they have no steps nor do they have any slots punched in the frames to accept steps.

The set is in exceptionally nice original condition.  The engine in not running, it needs the drum in the e-unit replaced.  The tender and cars will need rewired.  There are  two non original screws in the valve train, correct replacements if desired are available from parts vendors (see my links page), however the wheels and valve train spin freely and work as they should the way they are.
